Canvas printing: the complete guide before ordering

1. Choose an image that supports the desired format

Start from the best defined original file: camera photo, quality export or carefully scanned reproduction. An image saved from email or social media may have been compressed and resized. Its weight in megabytes is not enough to judge its quality.

Check pixel dimensions, sharpness of the important subject, dark areas, noise and compression artifacts. The texture of the canvas may make some small defects less visible, but it does not recreate missing details.

The useful resolution is calculated in the final format: pixels = centimeters /2.54 × pixels per inch. For an image of 40 × 60 cm, excluding mounting reserves, this represents approximately 2,362 × 3,543 pixels at 150 ppp or 4,724 × 7,087 pixels at 300 ppp. These are calculation benchmarks, not a universal obligation.

The level required depends on the viewing distance, texture, subject and process. High resolution does not correct focus blur. Consult 150 or 300 DPI, the pixel calculator → centimeters and the limits of enlargement.

A good quality JPG may be suitable; a TIFF alone does not improve a poor image. Follow the accepted formats and file limitations of the provider. For a purchased document or an AI-generated image, also check your usage rights. Find which file to send.

2. Define the format, framing and editing reserves

Measure the wall, nearby furniture and available passage. View the rectangle with a paper template before ordering. A large canvas must remain compatible with the recoil of the room and transport to its location.

The image ratio must match the chosen format or require adaptation. A 3:2 photo does not fill a square without cutting, adding margins or changing composition. Always preview what disappears from the frame.

Ask if the edges extend the image, use a mirror effect, or stay plain. These solutions modify the reading of the table. Do not assume that an advertised dimension describes both the image, the unmounted canvas and the size of a frame: have each measurement specified.

3. Compare canvas, inks and color rendering

Cotton, polyester or blend: the composition influences the characteristics of the support, but is not sufficient to classify its quality. Weaving, coating intended for inks, regularity and assembly also count. Weight indicates mass per surface area; a higher figure is not a guarantee of better results.

Ask for media reference, printing technology and care recommendations. The terms "pigment", "latex" and "UV" describe different processes: their name alone does not allow us to conclude that there is a universal lifespan. The exposure conditions and the support - ink - protection assembly are decisive.

A matte finish generally limits visible reflections; a brighter surface can give a different perception of blacks and saturation, but reflect the environment more. The choice depends on your image and the light of the place. Consult matte, satin or shiny and cotton or polyester.

For colors, follow the laboratory instructions and keep the requested profile in the file. Do not arbitrarily convert to CMYK. ICC profiles correspond to print configurations; Canson Infinity associates its profiles with media settings.

A bright screen and a print observed under the light of the room do not produce the same sensation. For a demanding order, request a test representative of the final support. Find sRGB, Adobe RGB or CMYK and the interest of a test.

4. Choose the presentation: rolled canvas, frame or American body

A rolled canvas comes without assembly ready to hang. You must provide the frame or frame, labor and a reserve of canvas compatible with this assembly. Compare its total cost once completed.

A canvas on a frame presents a canvas stretched over a structure. Check the thickness, edges, dimensions and hanging system included or to be added. The words "on frame" alone do not provide information on the fixings suitable for your wall.

An American crate typically surrounds the mounted canvas leaving visual space between the work and the frame. Check its color, profile, planned spacing and exterior clutter.

For very fine details, an image with text or a different rendering, also compare canvas and Fine Art paper or canvas, aluminum and acrylic. The medium must serve the image and use.

5. Check full price, deadlines and conditions

Prints are prepared to order, with a rolled presentation, on a chassis or in an American box depending on the selection. Product sheet estimates and the amount displayed before payment must be verified for your variant and your destination.

6. Check reception and prepare installation

Photograph the package before opening if you notice a mark, then open in a clean space without pointing a blade towards the canvas. Check the subject, dimensions, framing, surface and accessible assembly.

In the event of a defect, keep the product, packaging and photos. Contact the seller promptly with the order reference before a repair or improvised return. Consult what to do if the canvas arrives damaged or poorly printed.

For hanging, choose fixings compatible with the weight of the product and the nature of the wall; use the instructions provided and get help with a large format. Keep the canvas away from splashes, direct heat and prolonged sunlight, and follow recommended maintenance. Surface protection does not automatically make the board waterproof.
