Understanding Austin’s art scene
Campus, house galleries, studios and collecting venues
Austin’s scene is organized around complementary hubs. Downtown and the UT campus concentrate the major institutions; West 6th and Clarksville bring together several established galleries in houses and bungalows; Canopy forms a dense ecosystem of galleries and studios. East Austin supports independent and community spaces, while South Austin and the Arboretum extend the route to printmaking, sculpture and approachable galleries. Selection is based on recent activity, program quality, diversity of media, clear visitor information and opportunities to acquire works.
Choose one area per half-day
Downtown and UT can be explored together. West 6th lends itself to walking between galleries, while Canopy and East Austin deserve a separate time slot to enjoy studios and openings.
Check the day’s schedule
Commercial galleries are generally free, but some close between exhibitions. Austin Galleries receives visitors by appointment and Canopy opens its studios widely on the first Saturday of the month.
Prepare for a purchase
Ask about availability, dimensions, medium, provenance, certificate, framing, insurance and transport. A photograph of your wall or room also helps you choose the right size.
