Which reference image should I send for faithful reproduction?

AI illustration: choice of imaginary references for reproduction

Faithful reproduction begins with a clear reference. A sharp image helps understand composition, expressions and colors; a blurry or cropped capture can leave essential details in uncertainty. Here's how to choose and convey the best basis for your project at Alpha Reproduction.

To be sent as a priority: a complete, clear, unfiltered view, accompanied by the title, artist or source if you know them. Designate a primary reference and add useful details in addition. The illustrations in this article are generated by AI: imaginary landscapes and scenes, with no proof value on a historical work or an Alpha product.

1. Identify the work and version you want

For a master's work, indicate the title, the artist and, if possible, the museum or collection that preserves it. A link to the institution's notice helps identify the painting and distinguish several versions, studies or works with a related title.

Choose an image directly associated with this reference rather than a thumbnail found at random. Check that it is indeed the desired work, in a good way, with the entire composition. A photograph of another reproduction can be used to explain a taste, but must be presented as such.

If you are transmitting several images, name the one that will be authentic for the composition and explain the role of the others. For example: "main reference for the whole; second image for reading hands". Don't let views with different colors become conflicting instructions.

For a personal painting, photograph or family image, also indicate whether you are looking for a faithful copy or adaptation. Changing a background or adding an element should be discussed separately from the quality of the reference.

2. Check sharpness, dimensions and framing

Open the file and examine the important elements: faces, hands, outlines, small objects and light transitions. If these areas are already indistinct, a larger reproduction will not allow you to find with certainty what is missing.

Look at the dimensions in pixels, not just the "300 dpi" mention. For printing, the useful definition depends on the number of pixels and the final size. Changing a resolution value without adding pixels does not create detail; resampling can create pixels, but does not turn a small reference into a document faithful to the original. See them adobe explanations of size and resolution.

For a hand painting, a reference must above all make the shapes and shades useful for the work legible. There is no universal pixel threshold that guarantees the fidelity of all compositions. Have the file examined according to the format and technique envisaged.

Image available Utility Limit to check
Full sharp view Main reference Edges and small details clearly visible
Original file in good definition Working basis to examine Absence of filter or retouching not reported
Screenshot Identify the work at the first exchange Definition, interface and compression
Picture of a framed painting Showing the whole and its context Reflections, perspective and edge hidden by the frame
Close-up Read a specific area Does not replace the entire composition
Image enlarged or restored by AI Possible visual aid to report Details invented or transformed

3. Photograph a painting you own

Place the device facing the work, with the sensor as parallel as possible to its surface. Keep all four edges visible and avoid a side view: perspective can distort proportions.

Use even lighting. Check that a reflection does not obscure faces, that a shadow does not pass through the canvas and that the light areas are not completely white. If the painting is behind glass, change your position or lighting to reduce reflections; do not disassemble a fragile frame just to take a photo.

Stabilize the camera and check sharpness after shooting. Send a general view, then close-ups if certain areas are difficult to read. Keep light comparable to prevent each detail from having a different color.

4. Maintain a consistent color reference

Avoid filters, highly saturated modes, and automatic corrections that significantly change the image. If a retouch has already been applied, also send the original and specify the desired version.

Two photographs in the same painting may have different colors due to lighting, camera or processing. Your screen also influences their appearance. A digital image therefore does not, on its own, guarantee a perfect match with a painting seen in a museum.

If you prefer the palette of a particular version, say it explicitly: "this image is my reference for colors". If you don't know which one to choose, seek advice rather than merging several conflicting references.

Keep original available.

An enlargement or restoration tool can make an image more pleasant while modifying a face, texture or object. For faithful reproduction, report its use and transmit the file before processing.

5. Transmit the file without unnecessary loss

Send the original file rather than a preview capture. For a photographic image, a good quality JPEG may be suitable; other formats may be useful depending on the project. Ask for the accepted format before converting an unusual or very large file.

A messaging application can reduce an image depending on the sending method. If it offers a sending as a file or document, use it to further preserve the data, or transmit a suitable download link. Then check that the file received corresponds to the one sent.

Choose simple names: "reference-principale", "detail-face" or "original-without-retouch". Specify the function of each file in the message. A well-organized folder avoids working on the wrong version.

If you use a link, make sure it is accessible to the recipient and doesn't just lead to a thumbnail. For a museum work, add the source page. For a personal image, transmit it directly through the channel agreed with Alpha.

6. Prepare your request at Alpha Reproduction

On our contact page, you can start with an image or link, title or artist, desired dimensions and country of delivery. To attach photos, the page prompts you to write by email or add a link to the image in the form.

Your message may specify:

"I would like to reproduce [work /artist] in [width × height] format. The [name] file is my main reference. Other images show [details]. I would like to keep [composition and colors/adaptations specified]. Can you check if this reference is suitable for [oil or print], for delivery to [country]?"

Before launching, confirm the reference chosen, the framing and any limitations of the file. If the quality is insufficient, it may be better to look for a better source, redo the photograph or adapt the format.

To follow the following steps, see order a custom reproduction, from the first message to delivery. During validation, compare the rendering with the same reference agreed at the start.

Give advice on choosing your painting

Explore famous paintings from the catalog, then open the works sheets that you like to compare the formats and presentations offered. For a constraint of dimensions, frame or composition, present your project to Alpha Reproduction in order to confirm the possibilities before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Is a screenshot enough?

It can help identify the work at the first exchange. For the job, look for the original file or source to check the definition and details.

Is a 300 dpi image required?

No. The mention alone is not enough: for a print, the pixels and the final size count together. For a painting, the readability of the details remains essential.

Can we send multiple references?

Yes, by designating a main image and explaining the role of others. Report color or framing differences.

Does a close-up replace a full view?

No. It allows you to read an area, but the entire view remains necessary for proportions and composition.

Can we use an AI-enhanced image?

Report the processing and attach the original. An improvement can invent or modify details, which counts as a faithful copy.

How to send a photo without excessive compression?

Choose the original file by email, as an appropriate attachment or via an agreed link. Check the sending method and the version received.

What if I only find a small image?

Send it to identify the subject with its source. Alpha will be able to examine the project limitations; If possible, look for a better reference before setting the format.
