Born in 1609, Charles Poerson was a history and decorative painter, trained in the wake of Simon Vouet, leader of the French Baroque. He became a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture from its foundation in 1648, and completed numerous religious and decorative commissions for churches and royal institutions.
His style combines dramaturgy inspired by Italian Baroque, attention to decorative detail, and rigorous composition. He helped establish in France a sacred painting that is at once expressive, narrative, and elegant.
