Munich · Opened in 1836 · European painting from the 14th to the 18th century
Alte Pinakothek owes its wealth to the collections built up since the 16th century by the dukes and electors of Bavaria. Around 1800, the galleries of Düsseldorf, Mannheim and Deux-Ponts joined Munich, then secularization and acquisitions by Louis I further strengthen the whole. The king commissioned an innovative museum from Leo von Klenze, opened in 1836, whose large rooms lit from above became a European architectural model. Seriously damaged during the Second World War, the building was rebuilt until 1957 by Hans Döllgast, who left some brick scars visible. More than seven hundred paintings are on display, covering German and Flemish schools dutch, Italian, French and Spanish from the 14th to the 18th century. Van der Weyden, Rembrandt, Giotto and Raphael illustrate here the diversity of a journey ranging from medieval altarpieces to baroque painting. The "Alte Pinakothek" selection " compares in particular Adoration of the Magi - Rogier van der Weyden and Descent from the Cross - Rembrandt. His reading favors space.
At Alte Pinakothek, several centuries of princely collection become a panorama where each European school affirms its way of telling, illuminating and embodying.
