Remagen · Complex opened in 2007 · Arp, modern art and Rau collection
The Arp Museum connects a neoclassical Rhine station to Richard Meier's white building, between abstract avant-garde, landscape and European masters.
Rolandseck station, built in the 19th century in the romantic landscape of the Rhine, became after 1964 a place for artistic encounters thanks to the gallery owner Johannes Wasmuth. International musicians and visual artists work and exhibit there and help save the building. Part of the legacy of Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp arrived in Rolandseck in the late 1970s. The museum was founded in 1995, then the new building designed by Richard Meier opened on September 28 2007, forty meters above the river and connected to the station by tunnels, elevator and footbridge. The collection includes approximately four hundred works by the Arp, more than a thousand contemporary works and more than two hundred and seventy pieces by the Rau collection for UNICEF. Monet, Renoir, Cézanne and Pissarro here connect impressionism to the historical masters presented in this avant-garde museum. The "Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck" selection notably compares Chemin sous bois - Claude Monet and The pyramids of Port Coton - Claude Monet. Its reading favors space.
At Rolandseck, the route is already a work: station, tunnel, light, ascent and view of the Rhine prepare the eye for the shapes of Arp and the painted landscape.
