Philadelphia · Educational Foundation · Impressionism and early modernities
Albert C. Barnes constituted for four decades one of the greatest collections of impressionism, post-impressionism and modern European art. He created his foundation as an educational institution, convinced that observation direct forms must precede historical discourses. The sets, or "hangings", mix paintings, ironwork, furniture and objects without conventional hierarchy. The collection preserves the greatest number of paintings Renoir in the world, with one hundred and seventy-nine works, as well as sixty-nine Cézanne. Matisse, Renoir and Cézanne dominate the available selection, from The Joy of Living to Card Players. The "Barnes Foundation" selection includes opposite Odalisque - Henri Matisse and Odalisque at the teapot - Pierre-Auguste Renoir. His reading favors atmosphere.
Like Barnes, a work is never looked at alone: lines, colors and rhythms connect it to the objects that surround it.
