Born in Lille in 1837 under the name Charles Émile Auguste Durand, Carolus-Duran trained in his city then in Paris. His travels in Italy and especially in Spain led him to study Velázquez, whose sober backgrounds, luminous blacks and direct painting he retained. The success of The Lady with the Glove in 1869 launched a brilliant career as a portrait painter. A sought-after professor of John Singer Sargent and many foreign artists, he became a member of the Institute then director of the French Academy in Rome in 1905. The "Carolus-Duran" selection notably pitted Le Baiser and Claude Monet against each other. His reading favors figures.
