1768 -1832 · Neoclassicism and great French decor
Born in Paris in 1768 into a family of artisans, Charles Meynier trained with the engraver Pierre-Philippe Choffard then entered the studio of François-André Vincent. Second at the Prix de Rome in 1789, he stayed in Italy during the revolutionary years before returning to Paris. His Muses commissioned for the industrialist Boyer-Fonfrède demonstrated a neoclassical science of figure and allegory. Under the Consulate and the Empire, Meynier painted military episodes, designed decorations for the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel and then worked on the ceilings of the Louvre. Elected to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1816 then professor at the School of Fine Arts, he maintained until the Restoration an official career based on drawing and great composition. The "Charles Meynier" selection notably compares The Triumph of French Painting and The Nymphs of Parthenope. His reading favors atmosphere.
Meynier transforms allegory into monumental space: figures, architecture and symbols remain ordered with almost musical clarity.
