circa 1609 -1667 · Parisian baroque and sacred tapestry
Born around 1609 in Metz or Vic-sur-Seille, Charles Poerson trained in Nancy then moved to Paris in 1633 to enter Simon Vouet's workshop. He established himself in 1638 and quickly received numerous religious and decorative commissions. For Notre-Dame de Paris, his May of 1642, The Preaching of Saint Peter in Jerusalem, revealed a dynamic composition and gestural eloquence inherited from Vouet. Poerson also created eleven boxes for the large hanging of the Life of the Virgin, today kept at Strasbourg Cathedral, and participated in the gallery of Illustrious Men at the Palais-Cardinal de Richelieu. Received at the Royal Academy in 1651, he became rector in 1658. The "Charles Poerson" selection notably compares Saint Peter preaching in Jerusalem and The Flight into Egypt. Its reading favors movement.
Poerson circulates the story through hands, looks and draperies: religious painting takes on the force of public action.
