Giovanni Battista Cima was born around 1459 in Conegliano, a town on Venetian land whose name he adopted. Installed in Venice no later than the 1480s, he developed his art through contact with Giovanni Bellini, whose clarity of sacred compositions he took up while asserting a sensitivity specific to the landscape. His altarpieces, his sacred conversazioni and his numerous Virgins and Children combine calm figures with hills, fortified towns and transparent skies inspired by Veneto. Cima works for churches and brotherhoods in Venice, but also for sponsors from Parma, Treviso and other cities in northern Italy. More than thirty altarpieces are still there preserved, a sign of an active workshop and a wide distribution of his models. Until his death around 1517 or 1518, he maintained a balanced painting where the precision of the drawing, the Venetian color and the presence of nature supported religious meditation.
