Born in Avignon in 1714 into a family of painters, Claude-Joseph Vernet received initial training from his father Antoine then left for Rome in 1734 thanks to the support of Provençal patrons. For nearly twenty years, he studied the Italian coasts, Mediterranean light and the landscapes of Claude Lorrain and Salvator Rosa. Its calm seascapes, storms and shipwrecks attracted an international clientele, notably British travelers on the Grand Tour. Returning to France in 1753, Vernet was received at the Royal Academy and obtained a commission from the Ports of France from Louis XV.
