Born in The Hague around 1500 -1510, Corneille de Lyon, first called Corneille de La Haye, settled in Lyon before 1533. His apprenticeship remains unknown, but his precision reveals a Nordic culture adapted to French taste for small portraits format. From the 1530s, he received members of the court, nobles, merchants and bourgeois in his studio. Appointed painter to the dauphin, future Henry II, then painter and valet to the king, he retained his reputation under several reigns. Naturalized French in 1547, he led an active workshop where models were represented in busts, very close to the viewer, on a plain background generally green or blue. The face, hair, gaze, velvet and jewelry are enough to define rank and character. An inscription on the reverse of the Portrait of Pierre Aymeric provides the surest point of support for reconstructing his corpus, but numerous versions and studio works complicate the attributions. Died in Lyon in 1575, Corneille left a portrait formula of exceptional concentration. The "Corneille de Lyon" selection notably compares Portrait of a Young Man and The Man in the Feathered Hat.
