1848 -1912 · Military painting, war of 1870 and national memory
Jean-Baptiste Édouard Detaille was born in Paris in 1848. Passionate about soldiers, horses and uniforms at a very young age, he entered the studio of Ernest Meissonier in 1865, whose meticulous drawing and taste for documentation he retained. He started at the Salon at nineteen. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870 -1871 had a profound impact on his career: engaged in mobile guarding, he observed operations directly and produced drawings for the general staff. After the conflict, Detaille represented bivouacs, charges, defeats and acts of courage without renouncing material precision. With Alphonse de Neuville, he created the panoramas of Champigny and Rezonville. His research extends then to the Napoleonic epic and contemporary armies. Le Rêve, painted in 1888, shows conscripts asleep under the vision of past military glories and becomes a major image of national memory. Collector of uniforms, weapons and equipment, Detaille participated in the creation of the Army Museum and bequeathed him his collection. He died in 1912, after offering new uniforms for the French army. The "Édouard Detaille" selection notably compared Le Rêve and La Défense de Champigny. His reading favors the material.
Detail transforms accuracy into memory: the uniform, dust and movement of the troop make military history concrete and immediately readable.
