Edward Moran was born in 1829 in Bolton, England, into a family of weavers. He first learned to draw from a traveling artist before emigrating with his family to the United States in 1844. In Philadelphia, he studied with marine painter James Hamilton and deepened his observation of ships, skies and states of the sea. Moran exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and developed a reputation as a mariner capable of combining nautical accuracy and dramatic effect. Storms, rescues, fires, New York ports and fishing boats allowed him to explore the power of the ocean and the courage of the crews. Installed in New York, he also painted a series history dedicated to the maritime life of the United States, culminating with the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty in 1886. Brother of the landscaper Thomas Moran and father of the artist Percy Moran, Edward belongs to a true artistic dynasty.
