Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, was born in 1541 in Candia, Crete, then territory of the Republic of Venice. Trained in the Tardobyzantine tradition of the icon, he was already a master painter before leaving for Venice in 1567. He assimilated the color, light and freedom of touch of Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese, then stayed in Rome where he studied the monumental construction of bodies.
