1866 -1944 · Brazilian impressionism, symbolism and decorative arts
Eliseu d'Angelo Visconti was born in 1866 in Giffoni Valle Piana, Italy, and arrived as a child in Brazil. He studied at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios then at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro with Victor Meirelles, Rodolfo Amoedo and Henrique Bernardelli. In 1892, the first travel prize awarded by the Republic allowed him to continue his training in Paris, at the School of Fine Arts and with Eugène Grasset at the Guérin School. Visconti assimilated impressionism, symbolism and Art Nouveau without giving up direct attention to light. His silver medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition preceded his return to Brazil. His silver medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition preceded his return to Brazil. Portraits of Louise and their children, landscapes of Teresopolis, everyday scenes and self-portraits reveal a supple touch and atmospheric color. At the same time, he designed posters, objects and decorations, becoming a pioneer of Brazilian design. His monumental paintings for the Theatro Municipal de Rio de Janeiro united allegorical figures, decorative rhythm and architecture. Professor and experimenter until the end of his life, Visconti died in Rio in 1944. The "Eliseu Visconti" selection notably compared Self-portrait around 1905 and Scene of daily life in Paris. His reading favors composition.
Visconti connects workshop, house and town: the same moving light animates the family portrait, the tropical landscape and the monumental decor.
