Precision of the drawing, cold light, truth of the faces and contemporary scenes make Émile Friant one of the great French naturalists of the end of the 19th century.
Émile Friant was born in Dieuze in 1863 and grew up in Nancy, where his precocity opened the Municipal Drawing School to him. He continued his training in Paris with Alexandre Cabanel, without abandoning the direct view of his loved ones and of Lorraine life. Portraitist, designer, engraver and painter of genre scenes, he constructed his paintings with almost photographic observation, very controlled light and acute attention to expressions. Second prize in Rome at the age of twenty, medalist at the Salon then at the Universal Exhibition of 1889, he achieved rapid recognition with All Saints' Day. The Lovers, Pain and Shadows worn show another dimension of his art: gestures simple and bold framing transform an intimate relationship into a silent story. Friant also practiced engraving, taught at the École des beaux-arts in Paris and entered the Academy of Fine Arts in 1923. Died in Paris in 1932, he left an abundant corpus where academic virtuosity meets modernity of the gaze.
