From the 1850s, Meissonier broadened his ambition to history painting and especially to the Napoleonic epic. He followed the Italian campaign of 1859, observed uniforms, troop movements and horses, then prepared his paintings with an exceptional quantity of drawings, photographs, wax models and studies outdoors. French campaign, 1814 became the emblem of this method where a small format achieved monumental power. A rider himself, he passionately analyzes the anatomy and appearance of the horse. Covered with honors and highly sought after by collectors, Meissonier participated in the founding of the National Society of Fine Arts in 1890. He died in Paris in 1891, leaving paintings, sculptures, engravings and considerable workshop archives. The "Ernest Meissonier" selection notably compares Woman in Prayer at Saint-Marc in Venice and The Portrait of the Sergeant. His reading favors figures.
Meissonier constructs the plausible detail after detail: uniform, saddle, gesture and light must be accurate before the story can become spectacle.
