Federico Barocci was born in Urbino around 1535 into a family of artisans. Trained with his father Ambrogio, sculptor and gem engraver, then in the refined environment of the court of della Rovere, he studied Raphael, Correggio and the Venetian masters. Two stays in Rome allowed him to see the great decorations of the Renaissance and to participate in the papal projects. A serious illness, which he attributes to poisoning, brought him back permanently to Urbino around 1563. This distance did not limit his influence: brotherhoods, churches, dukes and popes ordered vast altarpieces from him. Barocci prepared each composition by an extraordinarily patient method. Overall sketches, studies by figures, pastel heads, wax models and colored cardboard allow you to experience gestures, light and chromatic relationships before the final canvas. Its religious scenes avoid monumental coldness: mothers, children, apostles and saints touch, lean and respond to each other in a continuous movement.
