Fra Bartolomeo was born near Florence in 1472 under the name Baccio della Porta, a nickname linked to the San Pier Gattolini gate where he lives. Trained with Cosimo Rosselli, he first worked with Mariotto Albertinelli. His first works assimilated Flemish precision, Florentine landscapes and Leonardo da Vinci's research on pyramid composition. Deeply marked by the preaching of Jérôme Savonarole, of whom he painted an austere portrait, Baccio briefly abandoned painting after the execution of the Dominican in 1498. In 1500, he himself entered the convent of San Marco and took the name Fra Bartolomeo. He took up the brush again in 1504 to direct the convent workshop. His meeting with young Raphaël is decisive: the two artists discuss perspective, movement and the balance of groups. Fra Bartolomeo then develops a monumental religious painting.
