Ascending compositions, light colors, academic drawing and a sense of monumental decor make Francisco Bayeu one of the great painters of the Spanish court in the 18th century.

Francisco Bayeu y Subías was born in Zaragoza in 1734 into a family of artists. He learned from Juan Andrés Merklein and studied drawing with José Luzân. Corrado Giaquinto's luminous painting and the decorations created in Zaragoza based on his models profoundly marked his beginnings. Bayeu quickly became one of the most promising representatives of late Aragonese Baroque. In 1767 he received the title of painter of the Chamber and intervened in several royal residences. Frescoes, ceilings and domes showcase virtues, allegories and religious subjects in vast compositions designed to be seen from below. At the Pilar Basilica in Zaragoza, its decorations combine local fidelity and court ambition. Bayeu also designed numerous tapestry boxes and supervised the work of the young Francisco de Goya, his brother-in-law, for a time. HAS alongside major official programs, Bayeu paints portraits, landscapes, walking scenes and oil studies. The Bridge on the Madrid Canal and The Paseo de las Delicias show a more direct observation of the city and its leisure activities. His sketches reveal a free touch that the grand decor then orders. Appointed director of the Academy of San Fernando, Bayeu died in Madrid in 1795, leaving a work that links baroque, rococo and Enlightenment culture.
