François Gérard was born in Rome in 1770 into a French family and returned to Paris during his childhood. He studied with the sculptor Augustin Pajou, the painter Nicolas-Guy Brenet, then entered the studio of Jacques-Louis David in 1786. There he acquired precise drawing, a taste for Antiquity and a clear composition, while developing a more flexible sensitivity to the face, fabric and social elegance. The Revolution disrupted institutions and careers. Gérard worked on illustration, participated in competitions and established himself with Bélisaire then Psyche and Love, presented in 1798. This last work combined neoclassical ideal, softness of modeling and intimate feeling. Noticed through the Bonapartes, he became one of the essential painters of the Consulate and the Empire. His official portrait of Napoleon in the costume of the Rite sets an image of sovereignty abundantly repeated by the workshop and disseminated throughout Europe. Joséphine, Marie-Louise, Caroline Murat, Talleyrand and the ruling families are represented by the man who is soon nicknamed "the painter of kings and the king of painters". Gérard knows how to reconcile rank and personality: pose, decor and accessories assert status, while the face retains individual attention. He goes through regime changes without losing his position. Louis XVIII then Charles X entrust him with portraits and great historical subjects. Henri IV's Entry into Paris transforms national history into a spectacle of reconciliation. Corinne at Cape Misène reveals another vein, literary and romantic, where the landscape accompanies the heroine's inspiration. Anobled baron in 1819, Gérard ran a salon frequented by artists, writers and diplomats. He died in Paris in 1837.
