Frans Floris, born Frans de Vriendt in Antwerp in 1519 or 1520, belongs to a family of artists. His brother Cornelis Floris became a major architect and sculptor. Initially oriented towards sculpture, Frans chose painting and trained in the Netherlands before traveling to Italy between 1541 or 1542 and 1545. In Rome, he studied Raphael, Michelangelo, Vatican frescoes and ancient sculptures. Back in Antwerp, he sought to integrate this Italian monumentality with the descriptive precision and expressiveness of the North. This synthesis made him the central figure of Flemish Romanism. The fall of the rebel angels, painted in 1554 for the altar of the fencers' guild in the antwerp Cathedral, constitutes his masterpiece. The Archangel Michael dominates a dizzying melee of bodies, wings, claws and hybrid demons. The athletic anatomy is reminiscent of Michelangelo, while the seven-headed dragon and fantastic creatures extend Dürer and the northern imagination. Floris runs a considerable workshop, capable of responding to numerous commissions for altarpieces, mythologies, allegories and portraits. Studies of heads, drawings and models are reused and adapted by assistants depending on the subject. This organization announces, on a 16th century scale, the future functioning of Rubens' workshop. The Holy Family reveals a more intimate vein, but retains the sculptural solidity of the figures. In Jesus Christ bringing together humanity through his sacrifice, crowd, doctrine and monumentality combine into an image of universal protection. The iconoclastic troubles of 1566 destroyed a significant part of Antwerp's religious production, today complicating the evaluation of his corpus. Floris died in Antwerp in 1570.
