Franz Stuck was born in 1863 in Tettenweis, Lower Bavaria, into the family of a miller. He studied at the School of Decorative Arts then at the Munich Academy, while earning his living through illustration, caricature and ornamental drawings. His first great success as a painter came in 1889 with The Guardian of Paradise. Stuck then constructed a symbolist universe populated by biblical, mythological and allegorical figures. Sin, with its frontal model entwined by a snake, became one of the most famous images of the end of the century. Centaurs, fauns, nymphs, sphinxes and Amazons express desire, violence, instinct and moral ambiguity through strongly modeled bodies and dark backgrounds. In 1892, Stuck helped found the Munich Secession, then became a professor at the Academy in 1895. Among his students were Kandinsky, Klee and Albers. Painter, sculptor, graphic designer, decorator and architect, in 1897 -1898 he designed his Villa Stuck as a total work of art. Facade, furniture, colors, reliefs and workshop form an environment intended to showcase his art and status. Ennobled in 1906, he now signed Franz von Stuck.
