Georges Lacombe was born in Versailles in 1868 into a cultured family and trained in painting with Alfred Roll and Henri Gervex. His meeting with Paul Sérusier in the early 1890s introduced him to the Nabis group, alongside Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard and Paul Ranson. Lacombe shares their desire to go beyond naturalistic imitation through the flatness, contour, memory and decorative value of the surface.
