Geometric shots, bold colors, reconstructed figures and ballet settings give Georges Valmier a singular voice between cubism and abstraction.

Georges Valmier was born in Angoulême in 1885 and grew up in an environment attentive to music. After his military service, he entered the Paris School of Fine Arts in the studio of Luc-Olivier Merson. The Cézanne retrospective of 1907 and the birth of Cubism gradually moved him away from academic teaching. Valmier, however, never reduced color to the secondary role it occupied in analytical cubism. Still lifes, landscapes and figures are cut into brightly colored facets whose interlocking lines maintain great decorative clarity. Mobilized during the First World War, he resumed his career in the early 1920s and signed a contract with the merchant Léonce Rosenberg, who exhibited it at the L'Effort moderne gallery. He thus joins a network where Léger, Metzinger, Herbin and the search for a cubism that has become a language of construction intersect. Valmier also works for the stage. The costumes and sets of the ballet Cyprien or love at eighteen, designed in 1923 -1924, show how his color shots can become body, space and movement.
