1825 -1890 · Milan, Risorgimento and patriotic genre painting
Gerolamo, or Girolamo, Induno was born in Milan in 1825. He studied at the Brera Academy with Luigi Sabatelli and worked near his older brother Domenico, also a painter. The revolutions of 1848 disrupted his career. Induno participated in the Five Days of Milan then took refuge in Switzerland before joining Rome, where he defended the Roman Republic of 1849 and was injured. He then accompanied the Risorgimento campaigns as a fighter, witness and painter, notably in Crimea then in the wars of independence and around Garibaldi. This direct experience distinguishes his military scenes. The Battle of Magenta or The capture of Palestro are not limited to strategy and uniforms: fatigue, injury, waiting and solidarity give a human scale to the national event. Induno also excels in genre painting. While waiting for the train, Children with bagpipes or domestic interiors describe contemporary society with an immediately accessible narrative. The departure of the Garibaldian shows how politics runs through the family: the farewell, the volunteer's costume and household objects give patriotic commitment a daily emotion. In Brera, Triste presentimento echoes Hayez's Kiss in the room of a young woman worried about her fiancé who has gone to fight. The Pinacoteca emphasizes that Gerolamo and Domenico, painters and Garibaldians thus bring history closer to the public through intimate images. Induno enjoyed great success at Italian and international exhibitions, also worked as an illustrator and participated in the visual construction of national memory after unity. Died in Milan in 1890, he left a work where great history and ordinary life remained inseparable. The "Gerolamo Induno" selection notably compares A Scene from the Risorgimento and Waiting for the Train. His reading favors figures.
Induno paints the Risorgimento from home as much as from the battlefield: national history can be read in a farewell, an expectation or a familiar object.
