Giovanni Baglione was born in Rome around 1566 and died there at the end of 1643 or the beginning of 1644. Trained with the Florentine Francesco Morelli, he participated at a very young age in the major decorative projects of the Rome of Sixtus V, notably at the Vatican Library and at the Scala Santa. His beginnings belonged to late Mannerism: slender figures, scholarly compositions and light color. After a stay in Naples, he returned to a Rome where the appearance of Caravaggio shook up painting. Baglione briefly adopted naturalism, models close to the people and the contrasts of light of the new style. The Ecstasy of Saint Francis of 1601 is among the first major examples of this phase.
