Giovanni Domenico, known as Giandomenico, Tiepolo was born in Venice in 1727. Eldest son of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, he trained at a very young age in the family workshop by copying drawings, models and paintings. From the 1740s, he became an essential assistant, but at the same time affirmed a personal career. Between 1747 and 1749, his cycle for the Crucifix oratory in San Polo already revealed an independent painter and an accomplished engraver. He accompanied his father and brother Lorenzo to Würzburg from 1750 to 1753, collaborating on the frescoes of the Residence, then working at the Villa Valmarana near Vicenza. In 1762, the family left for Madrid to decorate the Royal Palace. After the death of Giovanni Battista in 1770, Domenico returned to Venice and developed an increasingly personal language. He retains the fluidity of the drawing and the light of his father's workshop, but brings the stories closer to ordinary life. In his series devoted to the life of Christ, miracles take place in front of a crowd of curious people, merchants and children observed with humor. Christ and the adulterous woman or the healing of the paralytic give as much importance to the reactions of witnesses as to the sacred center. Giandomenico also paints balls, walks, charlatans and social scenes, such as Le Menuet, where elegance already includes an ironic distance. At the family villa in Zianigo, he creates frescoes Punch; at the end of his life, the vast Divertimento per li regazzi transformed the character of commedia dell'arte into the grotesque hero of an entire society. Died in Venice in 1804, Domenico is today recognized for a graphic invention which leads the rococo towards modern chronicle and satire.
