Guy Orlando Rose was born in 1867 in San Gabriel, California, into a family linked to state politics. He studied at the California School of Design in San Francisco, where he quickly received distinctions in drawing and painting. In 1888, he left for Paris and joined the Académie Julian. The study of the model, the Salons and French painting gave him a solid construction. Rose stayed in Giverny in 1890, then returned there from 1899 and bought a house in the village in 1904.
