Direct presence, clear light and economy of decor give Henry Raeburn's portraits a singular authority at the time of the Scottish Enlightenment.

Henry Raeburn was born in Stockbridge, near Edinburgh, in 1756. Orphaned at a very young age, he was apprenticed to a goldsmith. The miniature and precision of the drawing soon opened the way for him to portraiture, which he learned largely through practice before staying in London and then in Italy. Returning to Edinburgh in 1787, Raeburn built most of his career there. Unlike many Scottish painters attracted to London, he remained at the heart of the Scottish Enlightenment society and painted lawyers, professors, doctors, owners, soldiers, women and children. His studio became a human archive of this cultured and ambitious Scotland. Raeburn worked directly on the canvas with great confidence. The backgrounds often remain dark or widely brushed; the light focuses on the face, hands and some accents of the costume. This economy prevents social rank from masking the individual. The Skating Minister, painted around 1795 and traditionally identified as the Reverend Robert Walker, takes this ability to the extreme. The dark figure slides across the ice in precise balance, both portrait, movement study and winter landscape. The Drummond Children shows another tone: spontaneous gestures, proximity and light clothing make childhood present without abandoning construction. The Portrait of Nancy Graham, also called Innocence uses light, softness of the face and simplicity of pose to transform the effigy into an ideal image. In the portrait of David Hume, professional gravity agrees with a direct observation of character. Elected to the Royal Academy in 1815, Raeburn was knighted in 1822 and then appointed painter to the king in Scotland. He died in Edinburgh in 1823, leaving a monumental gallery of personalities captured with frankness, density and restraint. Raeburn removes almost everything that distracts from the model: in the shadows, a few bursts of light are then enough to reveal a face, a rank and above all a character.
