Jacob Duck was born in Utrecht around 1598 or 1600. He began by learning goldsmithing in 1611 and became a master goldsmith in 1619. This first discipline perhaps explains the lasting attention he paid to armor, fabrics, instruments, furniture and small objects. In 1621 he was registered as an apprentice painter and probably received teaching from Joost Cornelisz Droochsloot. He became master of the guild of Saint Luke of Utrecht around 1630 -1632. Duck then worked between Utrecht, Haarlem, Wijk bij Duurstede and, in the 1650s, The Hague, before returning to his hometown where he died in 1667. His specialty was the small format genre scene. He paints soldiers at rest, guardhouses, gallant companies, brothels, musicians and domestic interiors. The Loot Depot places weapons, breastplates, flags and clothing in an old church transformed by the war. The monumental decor contrasts with the idleness of the soldiers and the ambiguity of their exchanges. A couple in an interior with a bohemian fortune teller takes up a Utrecht subject but adapts it to the intimate scale and restraint of Amsterdam painters like Pieter Codde and Willem Duyster. Duck uses a palette of silver grays, browns, ochres and greens, awakened by a light satin or local red. Floors, curtains and embrasures lead often towards a secondary play, giving the small scenes theatrical depth. Humor, desire, distrust and military fatigue coexist without explicitly imposed morality. Some etchings extend his interest in figures in contemporary costume. Long considered a little master, Duck appears today as one of the finest inventors of the guardhouse genre.
