Jacob Hendricus Maris was born in The Hague in 1837 into a family of artists. He trained at the academies of The Hague and Antwerp, traveled to Germany then worked for several years in Paris with his brother Matthijs. Returning to the Netherlands in 1871, he became one of the major figures of the Hague School.
