Genesis 25 -50 · Ruse, exile, vision, struggle and reconciliation
Jacob is one of the great narrative characters of Genesis. Son of Isaac and Rebekah, twin brother of Esau, he bought the birthright then cunningly obtained the paternal blessing intended for his brother. Forced to flee, he dreams of Bethel of a ladder connecting earth and sky, traversed by angels. This vision transforms a place of sleep and uncertainty into a space of promise. In Turner, the ladder becomes an almost immaterial phenomenon of light. After years spent with Laban, Jacob returns with his family and his flocks. The night before his meeting with Esau, he struggles until dawn with a mysterious being, man, angel or divine manifestation depending on interpretations. Wounded at the hip but refusing to let go of his opponent without blessing, he received the name Israel. Delacroix gives this fight monumental physical power; Rembrandt makes it an obscure embrace where struggle and blessing seem to take place confuse. The cycle ends with reconciliation with Esau, then transmission to subsequent generations. In The Blessing of Joseph's Sons, Rembrandt shows an elderly Jacob guiding his hands above Ephraim and Manasseh. THERE painting thus transforms his story into an interior journey: that of a man who conquers, loses, travels, struggles and finally learns to transmit. The "Jacob" selection notably compares Jacob’s Struggle with the Angel and Vision from Jacob's scale. His reading favors atmosphere.
Jacob changes his name after struggling all night: his identity is not simply given to him, it is born from trial and blessing.
