Almost photographic observation, ordinary gestures and political tensions make Jean-Eugène Buland a major witness to French naturalism.

Jean-Eugène Buland was born in Paris in 1852 into a family linked to engraving. A student of Alexandre Cabanel at the School of Fine Arts, he won two second prizes in Rome in 1878 and 1879. His academic training gave him a mastery of drawing and large composition, but he gradually moved away from ancient subjects to observe contemporary society.
