1874 -1956 · Sitges, Barcelona, Paris and Noucentist Mediterranean landscape
Joaquim Sunyer was born in Sitges in 1874 and trained in Barcelona at the École de la Llotja. He left for Paris in 1896 and remained there for several years, frequenting Montmartre, exhibiting and assimilating post-impressionist research. Cézanne offered him an essential model: constructing the figure and landscape by volumes, colorful plans and stable relationships rather than by anecdote. Back in Catalonia in the early 1910s, Sunyer became one of the main representatives of Noucentisme. This movement wishes to oppose modern instability with a Mediterranean culture based on clarity, measurement, order and classical continuity. Cala Forn, painted in Sitges in 1917, is an emblematic work. naked and clothed figures integrate with coastal relief, pine trees and the sea. They are neither worldly portraits nor simple bathers: their bodies become landscape shapes and symbols of an ideal Catalonia. The curves of the hills respond to the shoulders, the blues and ochres balance the composition, and the daily scene acquires a timeless gravity. Sunyer also paints portraits, maternity wards, family scenes and still lifes. His drawing also simplifies without dryness and his color remains luminous but contained. Died in Sitges in 1956, he leaves a work where the Parisian experience and the Mediterranean tradition come together in modern classicism. There selection "Joaquim Sunyer" notably compares Cala Forn. His reading favors the material.
Sunyer gives the body the same stability as the hill: figure, pine, rock and sea together make up the measured image of an ideal Mediterranean.
