1829 -1896 · London, Pre-Raphaelitism and Royal Academy
John Everett Millais was born in Southampton in 1829 and revealed exceptional precocity. Admitted to the Royal Academy schools at eleven, he acquired an academic master's degree which he soon questioned. In 1848, with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt, he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The group demanded direct observation of nature, light colors and precision prior to the conventions attributed to Raphael's successors. Christ in his parents' house caused scandal through his material and social realism. For Ophélie, Millais painted the vegetation on the banks of the Hogsmill River before integrating the figure of Elizabeth Siddal floating among flowers: botany, light and literary tragedy become inseparable. Autumn Leaves slows down the story around teenage girls, smoke and foliage, while The Northwest Passage and The Knight Errant bear witness in a later, broader manner. Millais then became a highly sought-after portraitist and illustrator. Elected president of the Royal Academy in 1896, shortly before his death, he left a career that linked youth rebellion, public success and institutional mastery. The selection "John Everett Millais" notably compared Ophelia and Christ in his parents' house. His reading favors drawing.
At Millais, precision never stops emotion: each flower, each fabric and each look intensifies the drama instead of decorating it.
