John Everett Millais was born in Southampton in 1829 and revealed exceptional precocity. Admitted to the Royal Academy schools at eleven, he acquired an academic master's degree which he soon questioned. In 1848, with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt, he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The group demanded direct observation of nature, light colors and precision prior to the conventions attributed to Raphael's successors.
