Joshua Reynolds was born in Plympton, Devon, in 1723. Apprentice of the portraitist Thomas Hudson in London, he traveled to the Mediterranean then stayed mainly in Italy from 1749 to 1752. Raphael, Michelangelo, Titian, Van Dyck, Rubens and Rembrandt nourished a language that he adapted to British portraiture. Back in London, Reynolds quickly became the sought-after painter of the aristocracy, officers, writers, actors and children. He raised the worldly effigy to the "great manner" by borrowing from history painting his poses, architecture, draperies and mythological allusions. The Waldegrave Ladies combines conversation, activity and family harmony; THE Archers transforms two friends into heroes of an aristocratic outdoors; The Age of Innocence and The Child Samuel give childhood a moral and poetic dimension. Elected first president of the Royal Academy in 1768, Reynolds delivered his Discourses on Art, major texts devoted to training, tradition and invention. His very experimental practice of the material has sometimes weakened colors, but his influence on European portraiture remains immense.
