József Rippl-Rónai was born in Kaposvár in 1861. After studying pharmacy, he chose painting, joined Munich in 1884 then Paris in 1887. He first worked with Mihály Munkácsy, but soon moved away from his dark realism to look at Gauguin, Pont-Aven and the research of the Nabis. Linked to Aristide Maillol, Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, he simplified the volumes, affirmed the outline and gave the color decorative autonomy. His dark period of the 1890s favored almost monochrome silhouettes and a silent atmosphere.
