Vicente Juan Masip, known as Juan de Juanes, was born around 1503 in La Font de la Figuera, in the kingdom of Valencia. He trained in the studio of his father, Vicente Masip, with whom he collaborated on numerous altarpieces. The attributions between the two artists sometimes remain debated, but from the 1530s Juan established himself as the dominant personality of the studio and soon as the most sought-after painter in Valencia.
