Juan de Valdés Leal was born in Seville in 1622 and spent part of his artistic youth in Cordoba, where the example of Antonio del Castillo nourished his naturalism. His first known signed work dates from 1647. Installed permanently in Seville in 1656, he became Murillo's great rival and participated with him in the founding of the Drawing Academy in 1660, of which he was president in 1663. Painter, designer, engraver and designer of ephemeral decorations, Valdés Leal developed a nervous baroque, made of shortcuts, sudden gestures, sharp lights and a sometimes quick and busy touch. His famous vanities of the Church of Santa Caridad, In ictu oculi and Finis gloriae mundi, recall the fragility of power and the body with striking frankness. Yet his work is not reduced to the macabre: Pietà, Assumption and cycles of saints reveal a rich color, sumptuous architecture and great narrative power. Linked to the Brotherhood of Charity from 1667, he worked tirelessly for Sevillian religious institutions until his death in 1690.
