Square, cross, color and space without object make Kazimir Malevich one of the most radical founders of modern abstraction.
Kazimir Malevich was born in 1879 near Kyiv into a Polish family. His first research spanned impressionism, symbolism, neoprimitivism then cubo-futurism. In Moscow, peasants, loggers and urban scenes fragmented until they made shape and color autonomous realities. In 1915, the 0.10 exhibition in Petrograd revealed suprematism and the Black Square: painting no longer imitated objects, it expressed a pure sensation in a white space conceived as infinite. Rectangles, crosses, circles and diagonals seem to float, accelerate or change scale. Malevich simultaneously develops theoretical thinking, architectural projects and collective teaching. HAS Vitebsk, he brought together the UNOVIS group and applied supremacist language to space, books and design. His 1927 trip to Warsaw, Berlin and the Bauhaus spread his work in Europe. Under pressure from the Soviet regime, he then returned to the figure and the peasantry, but retained frontality, geometry and enigmatic silence. His late self-portraits look at the Renaissance as much as they prolong abstraction.
