Giovanni Francesco Barbieri was born in Cento in 1591. His nickname, Guercino - the Guercino - refers to his strabismus. Largely self-taught, he assimilated the Ferrara painters Ludovico Carracci and the light of northern Italy. His first works are distinguished by vigorous material, deep shadows and popular figures captured with almost improvised energy. Called to Rome in 1621 by Pope Gregory XV, he notably painted the Dawn of the Ludovisi Casino, a vast celestial illusion which responds to classical tradition with a spectacular baroque movement. After the death of the Pope, he returned to Cento. His style gradually evolved towards clearer compositions, balanced and classic, without losing the intensity of the looks. In 1642, he moved to Bologna and took over part of Guido Reni's clientele. His workshop, administered with his brother Paolo Antonio, runs a Libro dei conti which documents orders and payments. A prolific painter, Guercino is also an extraordinary designer: pen, wash, red chalk and black stone allow him to invent figures and stories with dazzling freedom.
