Louis Léopold Robert was born in 1794 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, in the principality of Neuchâtel. He first learned engraving in Paris from Édouard Girardet, then joined the studio of Jacques-Louis David. Neoclassical drawing and the construction of the body remained the bases of his art. After the political upheavals of 1815, Robert returned to Switzerland before settling in Rome in 1818. There he discovered the costumes, pilgrimages, brigands, peasants and seasonal works of Italy. The artist does not treat them as simple anecdotes: he enlarges the figures, clarifies the groups and gives the people the dignity of history painting. Peasant woman from the Rome countryside retains intensity from the isolated model. The Return of the Madonna of the Arc Festival and The Arrival of the Harvesters in the Pontine Marshes develop vast processions where local color, rhythm and feeling match.
