Legendary speed, inexhaustible imagination and luminous color make Luca Giordano one of the greatest decorators of European Baroque.
Luca Giordano was born in Naples in 1634. His first paintings reveal the careful study of Jusepe de Ribera: meditative saints, deep shadows and dark matter. But Giordano travels early to Rome and Venice, looks at Raphael, the Carracci, Peter of Cortona and especially Veronese. His palette becomes clearer, architectures open and figures multiply in aerial compositions. His speed of execution earned him the nickname Luca Fa Presto. This virtuosity does not mean empty improvisation: he has an exceptional visual memory and knows how to adapt his language to the subject, the place and the sponsor. In Naples and Florence, he created altar paintings, mythological cycles and vast ceilings. Called to Spain in 1692 by Charles II, he worked at the Escorial, the Casón del Buen Retiro, the Toledo Cathedral and San Antonio de los Portugueses. His frescoes abolish the real ceiling with feigned architecture, clouds, angels and moving bodies. Acis and Galatea show his mythological ease; Abraham, Hagar or the Adoration of the Magi reveal his ability to constantly renew the biblical story. Returning to Naples in 1702, he continued to produce until his death in 1705. His fruitful work linked Neapolitan naturalism to the decorative light of the 18th century.
