Maarten van Heemskerck was born in 1498 in the Dutch village from which he took his name. After several apprenticeships, he joined the workshop of Jan van Scorel in Haarlem, who had recently returned from Italy. In 1532, Heemskerck became a member of the guild of Saint Luke and then left for Rome. For four years, he drew ancient statues, monuments, ruins and contemporary construction sites with exceptional attention. His Roman albums today constitute an essential visual memory of the city before numerous transformations. Back in Haarlem in 1536 or 1537, he developed an immediately recognizable Nordic mannerism. Bodies are muscular, gestures wide, spaces full scholarly architecture and ancient quotations. Adam and Eve combines anatomical monumentality and moral tension; Apollo and the Muses deploys humanist erudition; his Self-Portrait at the Colosseum proudly places the painter before the ruin he has studied. Heemskerck created altarpieces, portraits and mythological paintings, but his greatest influence came through around six hundred models intended for engraving. These suites illustrate Triumphs, wonders of the world, biblical stories and allegories for a European audience. A successful artist and important personality in Haarlem, he died in 1574. More than a hundred preserved paintings, Roman albums and his immense graphic work bear witness exceptionally productive.
