Silent figures, body spirituality and gradually liberated color make Magnus Enckell a major voice of the Finnish Golden Age.

Knut Magnus Enckell was born in Hamina, Finland, in 1870. He trained in Helsinki then traveled to Paris, where he studied at the Académie Julian and discovered Puvis de Chavannes, the symbolists and European debates on an art detached from simple imitation. His early works often renounce vibrant color in favor of an almost monochrome range. He played an important role as exhibition organizer and cultural mediator, helping to introduce contemporary French art to Finland. For five decades, he remained a reformer rather than an artist locked in a single way. He died in Stockholm in 1925.
