Marco Basaiti is a Venetian Renaissance painter documented between 1496 and 1530. Probably of Greek origin, he was born in Venice or Friuli. His signatures, often written Baxaiti, appear on numerous works and allow us to follow a poorly documented career. Around 1500 -1510, his art is very close to Giovanni Bellini: calm figures, clear light, deep colors and landscapes which prolong the emotion of the subject. Basaiti, however, is not reduced to an imitator. His characters retain a particular gravity and his open horizons create meditative breathing. He works for both private devotion and altarpieces and portraits. The resurrected Christ associates the frontal presence of the Savior with a luminous natural space. The Lamentation tightens the figures around the dead body, while the Vocation of the Sons of Zebedee transforms an evangelical episode into an encounter at the edge of a vast landscape. His portraits of men, often dressed in black, soberly reveal age, rank and character. His entire work shows how the next generation Bellini maintains the sacred clarity of the Quattrocento while opening it to a more atmospheric sensitivity. The "Marco Basaiti" selection notably compares the resurrected Christ and The Lamentation over the Body of the Dead Christ. His reading favors color.
In Basaiti, the landscape does not serve as a background: it prolongs the silence of the figures and gives devotion the space to breathe.
